STP CONTRACT SIGNED FOR CAYO ARCHAEOLGICAL INVESTMENTS
July 25, 2011 - The Cayo District is rich in tourist attractions, and in particular offers a diversity of Maya temples and underground Maya ceremonial centers. Three of the most popular archaeological sites, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Actun Tunichil Mukmal (ATM) will benefit from funding under the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP), undergoing significant improvements and enhancements to the facilities. The most pressing need is for replacement of the old handâcranked ferry at Xunantunich, with a larger but equally iconic model. Additional enhancements include expanded bathroom facilities and a new visitor center at Xunantunich, and visitor center renovation, trail upgrade and expansion of the bathrooms at Cahal Pech. A planned entrance and arrival area with much needed bathroom and changing facilities are in the works for ATM cave.
Today a contract for BZ$ 119,720 was signed with winning firm Incatema Consulting SA Ltd. who are working in conjunction with a well established local architect and engineer, and team of tourism management and heritage interpretation professionals. The firm will complete architectural designs and interpretation plans for the sites in preparation for over $Bz 800, 000 investment in works to begin early next year. The planned upgrades to the facilities are timely, with the launch of "Belize 2012. A New Beginning."
Funding for the US$15million Sustainable Tourism Program is provided by the Government of Belize through an IDB loan, and from the Belize Tourism Board.
