ButterflyThey are known as the ancient world's "Philosophers of Time" and their uncanny ability to predict and interpret the workings of the cosmos continues to fascinate people the world over. To the Maya, 2012 was an epoch of immense importance to all humanity. But what is the true relevance of this sacred year to us now, and can we interpret the messages they so carefully left behind as we approach the dawn of this new era?

Belize, in the heartland of the Maya, will host a series of insightful, quarterly public symposiums throughout 2012 as well as nationwide monthly school programs, all designed to engage adults and young people in exploring and honouring this ancient culture. Academics, researchers, archaeologists and other professionals will present the teachings and profound knowledge of this incredibly rich culture.

During the Tomulkin Maya Day held at Toledo's Lubaantun, ancient Maya beliefs, culture and society will come alive through the eyes of the today's Maya, who live and interact in communities largely unchanged from those of their ancestors. Belize Audubon's Earth Day will focus on how the Maya's unique cultural mores influenced their stewardship of the land. Traditional Maya curers and bush doctors who still practice with medicinal plants, herbs, prayer and offerings will be have a month of their own to share their knowledge and show why not only the Maya, but many other people still use and benefit from the rich pharmacopeia of Belize's Rainforests.

For academics, professionals and anyone who is interested in learning more about this intricate, rich and timeless culture, 2012 in Belize is indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity.
